Strengthening Shambhala by Thomas Adducci
Shambhala Chicago launched its annual Unified Giving fundraising campaign during Sunday’s Harvest of Peace celebration. The theme of this year’s campaign is “Strengthening Shambhala”. Our expansion to the West Loop has resulted in significant growth as we have welcomed over 80 new supporting members since our grand opening in March 2014. With our move to a much larger space, our operating costs have increased and we have added staff to support our growing community and expanded hours and course offerings.
We have also focused resources on bringing mindfulness to under-served communities and populations. One example is the Shambhala/youth-led initiative, Speak Up Chicago, which arose out of the “Imagining Peace” conference in 2013 and is intended to empower under-served youth through music, art and meditation. Another is mindfulness training for the staff of CeaseFire. We also extended meditation and peace circles to freshman and sophomores at Orr High School. These and other efforts made by Shambhala Chicago have been praised by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche as wonderful examples of leaving our cushions to learn how we can make a difference in a troubled world.
In order to continue to offer classes for all regardless of financial capability, to be open for meditation and community interaction throughout the week, and to continue to provide opportunities for growth for youth who otherwise may not have them, we need your help.
Our goal is to raise $36,000 between now and the end of the year. As of today we have raised over $11,000 from 37 people ranging from $5 – $1,000. We can reach this goal quickly by:
- Considering membership and making a monthly donation for as little as $10;
- Increasing your current membership contribution, even by $5;
- Offer a one-time contribution of any amount.
Your financial generosity has so far allowed us to serve many more than ever before, such as:
- Through partnerships with The Illinois Art of Hosting and Peace Circle communities;
- Organizations such as Rush University, CeaseFire, and Blue Cross Blue Shield;
- Many individuals like you interested in mindful living through expanded introductory offerings.
