STRESSED? Are you tired, overworked, and overwhelmed? What would happen if you could turn down the volume on that stress?

Relax It always seems as though I have a thousand things going on in my life. Have you ever felt that way? I get up, I do my meditation, I eat breakfast, get ready, leave for work, work all day long, go to the gym, and then try to spend some time with my boyfriend. This is an ideal day. But on top of that, I’m moving soon, and I have to get rid of all the crazy stuff I’ve been accumulating forever. Then there’s the regular stuff like maybe I have to get to the dentist or the accupunturist or my therapist… Then there’s the unexpected stuff like when I got in my car last week and it refused to start.

If I could invent having more time in a day, I would. There are days when it’s all great… But sometimes I feel downright overwhelmed trying to do everything.

I can’t offer a magic trick to create more time and space in a day, but I can say that meditation has become a very important part of my day, and when i don’t make the time for it, my day is lot more stressful than on the days I do make time. People ask me all the time, does it work? Does it help?

And here’s what I can say to that… When you meditate, you create the space in your mind that you might need to think more clearly, and as a result, you might be able to do things during your day in a calmer way. With mindfulness meditation, eventually, you begin to discover that your mind is capable of stability and calmness. I can’t say I had this realization overnight, but after doing for awhile, I could say that I’ve develop some contentment and some stillness.

When you do mindfulness meditation, you don’t just blank out or sleep. You keep coming back to an object, in this case the breath, so that eventually, you train your mind to keep coming back to the present moment. And most of the stress we have usually has to do with our minds worrying about the things that aren’t happening in the now.

Meditation isn’t a magic pill, but if you’re looking for something to cope with depression, anger, overwhelm, anxiety or any of those states of mind that cause unnecessary stress, it really can help. Just ten minutes of sitting in mindfulness meditation can make a difference in your entire day.

On Saturday Feb 8th from 8:30 am to 6pm and Sunday Feb 9th from 8:30 am to 2pm, we’re having a weekend class called “The Art of Being Human.” It’s a chance to explore and learn about meditation and a chance to work with it in a group environment with a senior teacher and others who might also be trying it out for the first time.
