Description

"In the Buddhist tradition, the purpose of taking refuge is to awaken from confusion and associate oneself with wakefulness. Taking refuge is a matter of commitment and acceptance and, at the same time, of openness and freedom. By taking the refuge vow we commit ourselves to freedom." - Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche

The course is open to anyone who is curious and interested in exploring the topic. Taking refuge marks the student's formal decision to become a Buddhist. This course is an opportunity to explore what it means to take that step.  It examines what it means to take refuge in each of the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. This class is especially recommended for those taking Refuge Vows with Acharya Richard John in October.  If you wish to take the refuge vow itself, please register at

The Refuge Vow: A Sourcebook is a compilation of commentaries and traditional text excerpts on the Buddhist Refuge Vow by various teachers including Chögyam Trungpa, Sakyong Mipham, Tsoknyi Rinpoche and Thrangu Rinpoche, among others. A valuable resource for those preparing to take the vow, it will be available at the West Loop center for $24.  Or you may wish to borrow it from a friend.

There will also be a required interview with the Acharya before the day of the vow ceremony, which you will schedule according to your availability.
