Welcome the Earth Dog together! Beginning with the ceremonial Kyudo First Shot at sunrise, and ending with a community pot luck, the Chicago Shambhala community will gather to practice, celebrate, and watch the broadcast of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche's annual Shambhala Day address. The official live broadcast from Boulder will begin at 12:00 p.m. (Central Time).

    2017 Shambhala Day Schedule:

    5:30 am  Center opens

6:00 am  Assemble in Shrine Room for Kyudo, "First Shot" or the ritual of "hatsuya," the shooting of the New Year's first arrow.  (Kyudo, meditative archery, is a heart-cleansing practice, as Shibata Sensei XX explained.  The emphasis is on the form one takes in the manner of shooting and the qualities of mind that are experienced in the process.  He said that hitting the target is good and not hitting the target is good.)

7:00 am  Breakfast and Conviviality (some food will also be available through the morning)

Those who wish are welcome to meditate in the shrine room.

Stroke practice (contemplative calligraphy) for graduates of Warrior Assembly--please bring your brush!  In the Vajrayana Shrine Room.

8:00 am  Lhasang--a ceremony using chant and juniper smoke to connect with the energies around us to purify and renew our minds, possessions, and endeavors.

The lhasang will be INDOORS this year.

9:00 am  Opening chants and the Elixir of Life Sadhana

Chants contain teachings to help us appreciate the basic goodness of every moment. Sadhanas are liturgies using chants, visualizations, actions and forms of meditation to wake us up to our basic goodness and help us live productive lives of service to others.  Today's sadhanas are open to all and will include explanations by our shastris (senior teachers).

9:45 am  Community Meeting:  New Member Ceremony with Pins, Annual Report, Oaths of Office, Unified Giving
